What did you find the most challenging thing about the illustration of this book?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: The most challenging thing for me was that the publishers wanted the animals in the book to look a bit more realistic than is my typical style, so I had to stretch a bit out of my comfort zone.\u00a0 It&#8217;s those challenges that help you grow as an artist, so I was happy to stretch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Is working on a touch and feel book more challenging than a plain text book? How?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Actually, I didn&#8217;t have to deal with that aspect of the book.\u00a0\u00a0 I simply submitted the illustrations and the publishers handled the rest.\u00a0 I had it pretty easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Q: <\/strong>What other children\u2019s books have you worked on?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>A: The First East Day<\/i> is my first book.\u00a0 Most of my work-to-date has been in magazines.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Q: <\/strong>What are you working on right now? Is that art similar or different from your children\u2019s book art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Not very often.\u00a0 Occasionally, I&#8217;ll do portraits as gifts for family and friends.\u00a0 And sometimes, I like to play with blocks of color on a large canvas and create abstracts.\u00a0 Both are so different from what I normally do. I find it relaxing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Can you explain your art process?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I work traditionally for the most part.\u00a0 I do pencil sketches and play with them until they&#8217;re where I want them to be.\u00a0 They can get really messy.<\/p>\n<p><a in.\u00a0 Sometimes, if things don&#8217;t look quite right, I may use <a href=\"http:\/\/photoshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photoshop<\/a> to play around with the composition, then print out the composition was changed, I&#8217;ll light box the new composition onto watercolor paper.\u00a0 If I was happy with my original sketch, I&#8217;ll lighten it in Photoshop so just a hint of line shows, and print it out directly onto watercolor paper.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I&#8217;ll break out my trusty black <a href=\"http:\/\/prismacolor.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Prismacolor<\/a> pencil and go over the lines.\u00a0 I try to keep it fairly loose so that the feel of my original sketch is still there.<\/p>\n<p>Then I&#8217;ll scan that into the computer (just in case I mess up the paint and need to redo it). Have you always worked in this media? If not, why did you switch?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My favorite medium is pencil, but I&#8217;m getting more comfortable with watercolor.\u00a0 I took a watercolor class this past summer with <a href=\"http:\/\/tednuttall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ted Nuttall<\/a>.\u00a0 And although he is a portrait artist, I&#8217;ve been enjoying applying some of the techniques I learned in his class to my work.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the great thing about being an artist: you&#8217;re always learning and evolving.<\/p>\n<p><a models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What gets you through an illustration when you\u2019re stuck for inspiration?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: The kidlit artist community is so amazing.\u00a0 I reach out to them when I&#8217;m in a slump.\u00a0 These people totally get where you&#8217;re coming from, and will lift you right up.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I also like to step away when I&#8217;m stuck: focus on my family, and my \u201cother\u201d life.\u00a0 Then when I come back (usually with a big cuppa black tea in hand), things flow much better.<\/p>\n<p><a Seymour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ann likes red.\u00a0 Red, red, red.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Is there a children\u2019s book illustrator whose work you gravitate towards in the bookstore now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My absolute favorite illustrator is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendymartinillustration.com\/wordpress\/2009\/10\/21\/interview-with-matt-phelan\/\">Matt Phelan<\/a>&#8230;. oh, what I would do to be able to draw like he does.\u00a0 He has such a gift (coupled with a great work ethic)!\u00a0 And he&#8217;s a really nice guy!<\/p>\n<p>I also like <a href=\"http:\/\/rwalley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">R.W. Alley<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/leuyenpham.com\/leuyenphamstudios.html\" target=\"_blank\">LeUyen Pham<\/a>&#8216;s artwork.\u00a0 They capture personality so wonderfully.<\/p>\n<p>And as far as the masters&#8230; well, they&#8217;re masters for a reason!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/N.C._Wyeth\" target=\"_blank\">N.C. It can be really tough being rejected. Really tough.\u00a0 You need that belief in order to dust yourself off (indulge in an Oreo or two), and do it all over again.\u00a0 Often times I find myself thinking, am I like one of those contestants on American Idol, you know, those contestants who think they can sing, but everyone in the audience thinks \u201cgo home!\u201d \u2026\u00a0 except with art.\u00a0 But, if you just keep at it, good things happen.<\/p>\n<p>The second piece of advice is to get your work out there. No one will hire you if they haven&#8217;t seen what you can do. Remember: postcards, on-line portfolio, blog, FB, Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and draw.\u00a0 Paint.
